Historical Notes: HMS Black Prince was a Duke of Edinburgh Class Armoured Cruiser built by Thames Iron Works, laid down February 1903, completed March 1906. Length 480 feet pp 505 feet 6 inches overall, beam 73 feet 6 inches, draught 26 feet, displacement 13,550 tons load. She was aprt of the 1st Cruiser Squadron Mediterranean Fleet. In August 1914 she was involved in hunt for SMS Goeben and Breslau, in August 1914 she captured a German merchant ship in the Red Sea, in November 1914 she was in Gibraltar and from December 1914 onwards was part of the 1st Cruiser Squadron Grand Fleet. On 1 June 1916 she was sunk at the Battle of Jutland.

The photograph opposite is taken from the "Overseas Men" photograph taken in Roysse Court in 1919, on 4th August when the town held its Homecoming Parade for the men returned from the war. The identification of this individual was made by a descendant.
